The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility GmbH (European XFEL GmbH) is a multi-national non-profit company. It will make available X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. Located in the Hamburg area, Germany, it will comprise a range of scientific instruments, using ultra-fast X-ray and optical lasers.

The optical laser group at European XFEL will develop, install and maintain a range of high power/energy femtosecond lasers for user operation beginning in 2016. For this purpose we are seeking to employ a

Laser scientist/engineer (f/m)

The position

  • plan and perform R&D of high power, ultra-short pulse diode pumped solid-state and fibre laser systems as well as parametric amplifiers
  • elaborate, perform and characterise experiments in the above disciplines
  • design and specify optical as well as opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems
  • specify, commission and operate complex laser systems
  • support and conduct planning and implementation of complete laser facilities (incl. laser safety etc.)
  • interact with facility users, X-ray instrument scientists and other technical disciplines


Requirements

  • PhD degree or equivalent academic or industrial experience in photonics, physics or similar discipline
  • proven experience with work in laser labs, particularly with ultra-fast lasers and the associated measurement and characterisation methods
  • sound theoretical background in the fields of lasers as well as ultra-fast lasers and parametric amplification
  • proven scientific track record
  • knowledge of opto-electronics and opto-mechanical design
  • knowledge of software for automatisation and control, dissemination of results, numerical mathematics, office (e.g. LabVIEW, MATLAB, MS Office)
  • acute awareness of the need for documentation and project planning, combined with the commitment to adhere to these necessities
  • excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-lingual, multi-disciplinary team

Duration: This appointment is initially limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension.
